Alexander Douglas McKittrick
Port Carling, Ontario
February 14th, 1950 - July 20th, 2020
We are saddened to announce the end of Alexander Douglas ‘Doug’ McKittrick’s journey. Doug leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years Teresa (nee MacDonald) and sister Roberta (Bolla). He is pre-deceased by his parents John (Wes) and Helen (nee Anderson), his brother John (Jack) and brother Ronald (Ron).
Doug was born in Toronto and graduated from George Brown College as a Denturist in 1970. He served his profession until his passing, working with seniors in residences during recent years, greatly enjoying the challenge of caring for the elderly. Doug first opened his business in Fort Erie in 1977. He mobilized his operations in 2010 and focussed on patient care in north Toronto and Muskoka for his last 10 years.
Doug’s spirit of adventure was also mobile at an early age, tagging along with his older brothers as a youngster. He had fond memories of waterskiing and perilous kite flying on the Moon River in summers at his parent’s cottage. Doug’s sportsmanship continued into adulthood. He became a snow ski instructor, and para glided from a mountain top in Germany on his 50th birthday. His sailing prowess was legendary. He crewed in a Newport to Bermuda race, knew Lake Ontario better than most and island hopped in the Caribbean for many winter months. A keen eye and sailor’s temperament made him a well sought-after mate Doug and T explored the four corners of the earth in their time together. They honeymooned in Hong Kong, China, and Thailand in 1987. They lived in Sydney Australia for a year and cavorted on a hobie cat in the harbour. Winter Ski trips in Europe followed, with some Caribbean sailing thrown in to warm things up. Camel rides in Egypt, scuba diving in Hawaii, pub drinking in the British Isles ... not many experienced travel life like the McKittrick’s. Teresa’s employment as a flight attendant only added to Doug’s view of an endless horizon.
In later years Doug enjoyed summer life on the Joe River with family and friends, puttering, collecting, and maintaining all things required for Cottage life. Winters were spent in (first) Florida and then Arizona, often with a trailer and motorcycle in tow. Doug would smile at how the famous sailor found the desert in his older age Few have seen or experienced the wonders of the world like Doug. His curiosity and enthusiasm for life was contagious and touched all who knew him.
He will be missed.
