Anne Slobodian

December 12, 1919 — October 19, 2024

Bracebridge

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and aunt, Anne Slobodian, who died peacefully at South Muskoka Hospital in Bracebridge, Ontario on October 19th, 2024, in her 105th year.

Anne Skuro was born in Sudbury, Ontario on December 12th, 1919, to parents John and Eva Skuro who emigrated from Ukraine in 1918. She was predeceased by her husband Mike Slobodian in 1987, her sisters Kaye (Perce), Mary (Walter), Teena (Andrew), and brothers Steve, Nick (Norma), Mike (Simone), and her loving companion Bill Jones.

Those who knew and loved Anne recognized that she possessed a very strong mind and spirit; she was full of love for her family and was so grateful to have all of her wonderful nieces, nephews, and close friends in her life. In her younger days, Anne was quite the athlete. Her husband Mike was a golf pro and as a result, Anne became an accomplished golfer. She also loved playing baseball in her youth and curled and bowled into her 90s. Anne was thrilled to have been able to do so much traveling with her dear friend Marlene; together they shared many adventures in many countries. Anne was also an integral part of her companion Bill’s family since the early 90s and shared mutual love and appreciation with Bill’s daughters, son-in-law, and granddaughters.

Anne moved to Castle Peak retirement residence in Bracebridge in May 2019. On October 27, 2019, she was clearly astonished and very grateful when friends and family surprised her with a 100th birthday celebration. When a local journalist asked if her participation in sports was the reason for her good health, longevity, and beautiful complexion she answered… No, it was because I never had children!

Anne had so much appreciation for and felt very blessed to have had the devoted attention of the wonderful staff of Castle Peak. As her frustration increased from the decline of her vision and hearing, she always felt well cared for and knew she was in good hands with her Castle Peak family. She loved and felt so special with the celebrations that Castle Peak staff acknowledged on her milestone birthdays and her family and close friends also appreciate all that was done to help her cope with her many challenges.

Anne has chosen to not have a funeral as she felt the best celebration was at her 100th birthday when everyone she loved was present. Sincere thanks to all who had such a positive and caring impact on Anne’s life.
