Brian James Tadeusz Hemens

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian, who passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Brian is survived by his son Andrew, wife Hermia (Cheung), parents William and Christine, and siblings: Dominique Pedersen (Kurtis); Phillip (Katherine Brown); Christina; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brian graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Pharmacy. He earned his Master’s degree from McMaster University in Health Research Methodology & Clinical Epidemiology. He worked in numerous hospitals and pharmacies in Toronto and Muskoka, bringing compassion and a strive for excellence in the care he provided.

Growing up, some of his favorite times were spent canoeing at his adopted grandfather, Dr Fred Boughen’s home on Lake Muskoka. He was particularly happy and proud when he could independently take out the 9.9 HP tin boat to cruise the lake. Brian shared a love of all things Star Trek and science fiction with his beloved Grandma Ully. Brian had a great gift for humour and language, often keeping his family laughing. One of Brian’s happy places was riding the waves of Virginia Beach on his boogie board; he would laugh with glee and joy.

Brian’s life was brightened and enriched when he met Hermia. The arrival of their son Andrew was the highlight of his life. He shared his passion and love of science and computers with Andrew, his “Best Buddy.” They spent countless happy hours travelling and exploring Toronto on the TTC.

With Brian’s difficult battle with serious mental health issues, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to The Canadian Mental Health Association Muskoka-Parry Sound (CMHA) or the Bracebridge Manna Food Bank.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Monday, March 17, from 5-8pm at the Reynolds Funeral Home, 1 Mary Street, Bracebridge. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at 11am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 118 McMurray Street, Bracebridge. Following the mass, please join the family for a reception in St Joseph's Church Hall.
