Dorothy Hammond

November 1, 1936 — April 12, 2022

Bracebridge

On April 12, 2022, Dorothy Sarah Jane (Miller) Hammond passed away peacefully at Andy’s House in Port Carling, Ontario. Daughter of Robert Harold "Harry" Miller and Viola Mayhew of Clear Lake, born November 1, 1936, in Sand Lake (near Kearney, Ontario).

Pre-deceased by her husband, Vern and her brother, Bill, of Bracebridge. She was a telephone operator in Bracebridge before her marriage to Vern in 1955. She enjoyed being a part of the Hammond family and spoke of the many good times had over the years.

Dorothy will be sadly missed by her children and their spouses, Cathy Nord (Vince), Bob (Bev), Scott (Marilyn) and Barry (Nancy).  Dorothy had 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by the last remaining Miller, her nephew John (Suzi).

Dorothy was a skilled seamstress and knitter and was known for her prize-winning entries in the Bracebridge Fall Fair, especially her smocking. Dorothy was "mom" to many of her children’s friends as they grew up. She wouldn't leave anyone out who needed a place to stay, a meal or a shoulder to lean on. The dining room table was open to all visitors and all conversations. She loved to play in the bell choir, and she loved to travel, her biggest trip being to China where she walked on the Great Wall. She was a bowler, a curler and huge Bracebridge Minor Hockey supporter earning the Bracebridge Minor Hockey lifetime member award. Mom loved the Toronto Blue Jays and would not miss a game, either watching on TV or listening on the radio. Mom enjoyed playing cards, needle point, cross words. She most lately enjoyed playing Jeopardy on TV, and solving police crimes on her favorite show, Blue Bloods. She had a secret crush on Tom Selleck! Mom was small in stature but big in attitude, just ask anyone who knew her, or refereed Junior C Hockey in Town.

In following Dorothy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held at the Bracebridge United Church on April 29, 2022, at 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Hospice Muskoka, or the Bracebridge Agricultural Society would be greatly appreciated and can be arranged through Reynolds Funeral Home.
