Surrounded by her family, Elizabeth "Betty" Gardner (Guthrie) went home to be with her Lord at 92 years of age on Wed., July 31, 2013 at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ont. Beloved wife of the late Douglas "Bruce" Martin Gardner (1997). Dear mother of Martin (Betty Kay), Rae (Gloria), and Bruce (Vickie). Much loved grandma of 13 grandchildren, great grandmother of 12. Dear sister to Olive (Bill) Bleach, sister-in-law to Carol Guthrie, sister to the late Gordon (Kaye), Rae (Eileen), and Frank. Betty was born and raised in Guelph, and decorated beautiful wedding cakes for her family's business until her marriage on June 13, 1945. Betty & Bruce lived in Toronto, Fergus, and Guelph before moving to Port Sandfield in 1972. Betty moved to Ancaster in 2006. She was an artist with both cakes and canvas, an amazing cook, a voracious reader. Her home was open to everyone. She played piano at church and home, loved her flowers and gardens, overfed her cats with love and food and always kept the bird-feeders full. Whether stem and root or fur and foot, few living things approached her door without falling under her tender care. Plant or animal, man or woman, each was cared for "as unto the Lord." Eph. 4:32 says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Her favourite verse reflected her own character, kind without exception, tenderhearted with all living things, loving without condition. She was truly a woman of God, her legacy cherished, her presence missed. As your expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate memorial gifts to the Gideons International in Canada and the SCA International (Shantymen's Christian Association). A funeral service at Church of the Way (formerly Glenwood Chapel) will be held on Tues., August 6, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. - Stan Ferguson officiating.
