Ellwood Spence

Cecil Ellwood (Lou) Spence P.Eng. Passed away peacefully in his 90th year on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at South Muskoka Hospital in Bracebridge, Ontario. Beloved husband of 63 years of Joan (Bradfield) Spence. Born March 25, 1925 in Fort William, Ontario, son of the late Dr. Cecil E. Spence, Co-Founder of the Fort William Spence Clinic, and May Deacon Spence, a member of the Lakehead's pioneering McKellar family after whom May Street in Thunder Bay was named. Predeceased by siblings Dr. Peter M. Spence, Dr. John B Spence, Prof Donald B Spence and Mary McLaren. Father of Laura Wittmer (Karl), Jack (Cathy Shiner), Norie (John McCrea). Grandfather of Josie (Jarryd Lee), William, Melanie, Patricia (Mike Gonda) and John. Step-Grandfather of Jennifer, Tom (Kadri) and Dianne McCrea (Mike Marsh). Great-Grandfather of Ella, Ruby, Rylan, Fallon & Emma. Also missed by daughter in law Anne Simmonds. Ellwood was educated at St Andrews College, Royal Roads Naval College and UofT 4T9 Engineering. He served actively in the Navy in the North Atlantic Patrol. Lou was a long time employee of CGE and was founding President of Larcan Communications. He enjoyed many fun years sailing at the Kettles Sailing Club in Muskoka, skiing at Curlew Ski Club in Huntsville and as an enthusiastic member of Muskoka Field Naturalists and Seniors for Nature. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer at Muskoka Literacy. Above all, Lou was generally an all-round nice guy. Visitation on Thursday, April 17th, 2014 from 12:00pm - 1:00pm at Reynolds Funeral Home "Turner Chapel", 1 Mary St, Bracebridge, ON immediately followed by a service at 1:00pm. Reception following at Browning Hall, 4 Mary St, Bracebridge, ON. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Literacy Society of South Muskoka (705) 687-9323 or Knox Presbyterian Church, Port Carling, Ontario (705) 765-3797 for the Donald B Spence Piano Fund.
