George Brodie

June 23, 1927 — August 8, 2015

George Macdonald Brodie June 23, 1927 - August 8, 2015 Our dear Dad, George, died peacefully in his home in Bracebridge under the care of his two daughters, Pamela and Alison, and nurses Lisa, Stephanie and Katie, early in the morning on Saturday, August 8th, 2015, in his 88th year. Dad was born in Brunel Township to Matilda Ann Broadbent Brodie and Frank Brodie. At a young age he moved with his family to the Town of Bracebridge. One of twelve children, Dad learned that hard work, honesty, tolerance, humour and humility were traits necessary in leading a successful and satisfying life. Dad lived by the rule "there is no such thing as ‘I can't ‘ ", and used this rule as a guiding principle throughout his life - facing every challenge regardless of how big or small head-on. Early in his youth he began working at a lumber camp, moved to Toronto to help build the subway system in that city, then moved back to Muskoka where he monitored and maintained the buoys and lighting system on Lakes Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau, and worked as an apprentice mechanic at Bracebridge Garage. In the mid-1960s, Dad opened his own mechanic shop, Northland Radiator Service, and later Brodie Auto Repair. He became a prominent and successful businessman in Muskoka. He was elected, and re-elected as a Town Councillor for many years. He also sat as a Councillor for the District of Muskoka standing behind recommendations that he believed were in the best interest of the community and the landscape that he so treasured. Dad believed spare time was to be spent in a constructive manner. He also believed that reflecting on the fruits of one's labour was as important as the labour itself. He spent his waking hours building homes, cottages, and industrial buildings, and restoring a number of antique boats and vintage vehicles, including one of only 14 air-cooled sedans produced in the world by the Franklin Motor Company. When not working, he spent time with his brothers, Don and Neil, and their wives, Naureen and Sybil, RVing around North America, boating the Muskoka Lakes, and making music at each other's homes. Dad was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Scottish Rite, and was Past President of the Muskoka Shrine Club. He developed deep and lasting friendships with a number of these men. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his brothers and sisters Marion, Dollie, Alice, Frank (Francis), Thomas, Emily, Denilde, David, Neil and Paul, and his first wife, Janet Louise Phillips Brodie, as well as his first born daughter, Amy Louise Brodie. He is survived by his brother, Don, and his daughters Pamela Brodie-McComb (Brian) and Alison Brodie, and his grandchildren Kailey, Elyse, Emma and Luke, as well as his second wife, Iona Brodie. His daughters would like to thank all of the dear friends and extended family that provided Dad with tremendous support and fellowship particularly during the last two months of his life. He was very grateful for your care and friendship. Thank you also to Dr. Phillips, Dr. Drohomyrecky, and palliative care nurses, Lisa, Stephanie and Katie from Closing the Gap for your compassion and support. Visitation will be from 7 - 9 pm at Reynold's Funeral Home ‘Turner Chapel' on August 13th. The funeral service will be the following day, August 14th, beginning at 1 pm at St. Thomas' Anglican Church in Bracebridge. Donations may be made to any Shriners' Childrens' Hospital.
