John Howard Tubman Died peacefully at the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Ann Mains of Carleton Place. Loving father of Kim McKenna (Don) of St. Louis and Ben Tubman (Cindy) of Bracebridge. Loving grandfather of John (Amanda), Benji, Ginny (Chris), Becky, Maggie and Grant and great-grandfather of Robert, Andrew and Steven. Dear brother of the late Lorna McLaughlin and brother-in-law of John Mains (Edna), Reba Featherstone (Glen), Henry Mains (Carol) and the late Melvin Mains. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Carp Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 115 Rivington Street, Carp on Sunday, February 3, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 225 Edmund Street, Carleton Place on Monday, February 4th, 2013 at 1 pm. Spring interment Munster Union Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made to the Carleton Place Hospital or the Parkinson's Society. John helped thousands of families cope with their loss while working with the rest of the Tubman family at Tubman Funeral Homes for over 42 years. He was so committed to his profession that he returned to college in 1979 and achieved his Funeral Directors license in 1981 and even after his retirement he continued to care for families. He cared for his community and volunteered thousands of hours through the West Ottawa Lions Club, and was President from 1974-1975. John was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow; For Dedicated Humanitarian Services Lions Clubs International Foundation, Lions Club International and the Helen Keller Fellowship; "Who through untiring service has given light in the darkness, warmth in the cold, compassion in the hurt, and humanity in the suffering to his fellow being." He lives his creed "Service to Others." "The only lightness dark is the night of darkness is ignorance and insensibility." John was a founding member and Past President of the Richmond Curling Club, a lifetime member and Past President of the Jock Hunt Camp and long time member of the Mississippi Golf Club where he was an enthusiastic member continuously working to improve his game or enjoy the round. John will be missed.
