Karl Sikola

August 16, 1926 — January 25, 2017

Passed away suddenly at his home in Bracebridge on January 25, 2017, at age 90. Dearly loved brother of Taimi (George) Skalin, Mamie (Heinz) Polawski and Olavi (Ida) Sikola. Beloved uncle to Sheila Cumming (Ray), Jerry Polawski, Gayle Skalin (Laurence), Debbie Moore (Craig), Mark Skalin (Joanne) and the late George Skalin. Dearly remembered by Helen (George) McDougall. Proud great-uncle to Stephanie, Natasha, Karl, Brian, David, Laurie and Kate and great-great-uncle to Ryley, Mattison, Logan, Abbi, Teagan and Olivia, all of Bracebridge. Also, proud great-uncle to George, Jessie, Alicia, Amos, Neal, Wyatt, Nell, Adrienne and Jennifer and great-great-uncle to Charlotte, all of southern Ontario. He was born in Finland on August 16, 1926, to the late Onni and Alina Sikola. The family immigrated to Canada in 1930 during hard times and, by 1939, they eventually settled on a homestead in Rouyn, Quebec, where they built the family home and farm. Karl was a millwright by trade and spent the majority of his working career in Toronto until his retirement in 1991. Upon retiring, he moved to Bracebridge where he built his home so that he could be closer to family. During those years he was able to enjoy his many hobbies which included photography, genealogy and keeping up with current technology, however, his main area of interest was electronics which began with crystal set radios in the 1930's to present day computers. He was the Patriarch of the family and one of the legacies he leaves behind is a well documented family tree tracing his family roots back to the 1700's. He was admired by many for his wisdom and wealth of knowledge and will be deeply missed by his lifelong friends, family and all who knew him. In keeping with Karl's wishes, cremation has taken place with his ashes to be buried next to his mother and father at St. Paul's Cemetery in Uffington. Donations can be made in his memory to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital Foundation. Family would like to request donations only - no flowers. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reynolds Funeral Home ‘Turner Chapel'. Memorial service in Karl's memory will be held at Reynolds Funeral Home ‘Turner Chapel' on Saturday, February 4, 2017 with arrival at 3 pm and service at 4 pm. Another celebration of life will be held later in late June 2017. Messages of condolence can be left for the family at www.reynoldsfuneral.com
