Passed away at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on Wednesday January 12th, at age 86. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Garth (“Gary”), of 30 years. Loving mother to Cathie (Carlo), Brent (Sandy) and Brian. She was a proud grandmother to Trevor (Jesse), Meagan (Tiago), Kate, Sarah (Omar), Andrew (Sierra) and Christine. Marilyn was able to claim the ‘great grandmother’ title with the arrival of Luisa (“Lulu”) in 2021. Survived by brother Eric and predeceased by brothers Eldon and Wilford and sisters Lovell, Helena and Norma.
Marilyn was born in Toronto and raised on Gothic Avenue in the High Park area. During a family vacation to Honey Harbour, Gary asked her to dance on a dare and “just like that” the die was cast. Married in 1957 they originally lived in Gravenhurst before putting down roots in Scarborough where they raised their family. Gary traveled the world for Massey Ferguson while Marilyn kept things running on the home front. As the kids got older, Marilyn entered the workforce and for many years worked in the business office at Scarborough General Hospital.
Gary was a son of Bracebrige (Henry/Cowan) and all three children were born there. Most weekends and vacations would find the family making the trek north to Muskoka to spend time with family and friends either on the water at Loon Lake in Gravenhurst, or on the snowmobile trail. During a family vacation to northern Ontario in the 70’s the family discovered Fox Lake Lodge near the tiny town of Cartier and that turned into decades long friendships that lasted right until the end.
Marilyn and Gary relocated to Brantford in the 80’s and Marilyn retired as a medical receptionist at a local doctor’s office there. She relocated to Newmarket several years ago to be closer to family. Many thanks to the staff and caregivers at Chartwell Alexander Muir Retirement Residence in Newmarket. The family would also like to acknowledge the dedication of the doctors and nursing teams at Southlake Regional Health Centre.
The family would also like to recognize the recent passing of Sandy Beaumont. Her husband Max was a close friend of Gary’s and served as Best Man at Marilyn and Gary’s wedding.
Interment will occur at Ufford Cemetery in the spring of 2022.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Marilyn may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society https://cancer.ca/en/ and can be arranged through Reynolds Funeral Home.
