SMITH, Mervin Sanford - passed away peacefully at Muskoka Landing Care Centre on October 18, 2018 at age 83. Predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy (Stimpson) in 2017. One of three sons (Ross, Ken) of Mildred and Sanford Smith born December 26, 1934. Devoted father of Donna, Bruce (Angie), Glenn (Dawn), and David (Joanne). Grandfather of Shannon (Jake) Smith, Candice (Jarrod) Ross, Sarah, Scott, Michelle, Lindsey (Evan) Bunn, and Riley. Great grandfather to Maddison, Scarlett, and Isaac.
As a young man he initially worked for the Beaumaris Golf Course, cutting grass. He would laugh about picking up abandoned golf balls and selling them back to the golfers, which was more lucrative than his hourly wage. Mervin applied his trade as a carpenter for many years and found special joy in helping his children with their renovation projects. He worked for Ted Donaldson using the knowledge of carpentry acquired from his father Sanford and later for Henry Butler for 35 years until Henry retired. Henry had encouraged Mervin to obtain his Carpentry Apprentice License which he did in 1970. The accompanying pay raise helped with a growing family. In semi-retirement he would later work with his brother Ken at Smith Country Gardens.
Mervin enjoyed collecting vintage Ford vehicles, which he would display with joy at car shows and collected many vintage tractors as well as part of his collection. He was active with Pioneer Power and would work his old hay press with the help of a team of horses. With wife Nancy, they would attend antique equipment and vehicle shows, always on the lookout for the next collectible.
Mervin would pass on his work ethic and strong family values to the next generation. Mervin was always available to lend a helping hand to family and strangers alike and will be missed by friends and family.
A special thanks to the staff at Muskoka Landing for the care given in the past year. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place with Nancy Smith at Ufford Cemetery at a future date. Memorial donations may be given to The Canadian Diabetes Association or the OSPCA in memory of Mervin. Messages of condolences may be extended to the family at www.reynoldsfuneral.com
