Ramona Louise Phillips, born on May 12, 1995, was killed instantly alongside her dear friend David in a motorcycle accident on the evening of Monday, September 17th, 2018. Ramona was born in Toronto and moved to Muskoka when she was 1 year and 4 months old, initially living in Gravenhurst and moving to Bracebridge in December 1997 after her beloved sister, Molly, was born. Ramona grew up in the idyllic surroundings of the Muskokan countryside, which inspired her love of nature. Ramona's early childhood was filled with dancing, singing, arts and crafts, looking for frogs, watching movies, and being read to. She had a particular fascination with dinosaurs and any Ripley's Believe It or Not books.
Starting dance lessons at the age of 4, Ramona found her true passion. She danced with the Bracebridge School of Ballet for 15 years, and was part of an incredibly special dance family including the students she taught, who she held so close to her heart. Her experience with these young students, and the children she babysat, inspired her to pursue teaching dance as a career. She attended York University from 2014-2016.
After experiencing several damaging relationships in high school and university, Ramona returned to Muskoka in order to pursue a healing path with the loving support of her family and community-based programs. In the words of her program coordinators "[Ramona] was working intently on her healing and resolving some of the challenges she faced... She was inspiring to women older than she was - with her courage and determination to heal."
Ramona was excited about her future. She had rented an apartment in Bracebridge and was intent on returning to dance and her career. Ramona spent her last day celebrating her achievements and looking forward to pursuing her dreams.
She is survived by her best friend and Sister Molly Jane Phillips, her devoted and loving Mother Emma Jane Phillips (Michael James McCurdy), her supportive and caring Father Michael Gordon Phillips (Emma Burton), Grandparents Pru Donaldson (Ian Donaldson), Michael Hussey (Pauline Hussey), Virginia Phillips (Carlyle Phillips d. 2016), Aunts and Uncles Sarah James (Tim James), Brigham Phillips (Briar Boake), Bruce Phillips (Karen Conrad-Phillips), Heather Phillips (David Rasmussen), and cousins Zeke & Zoey James, Cali, Linden, Alyssa, Julia, & Joanna Phillips.
Ramona's compassion, empathy, and brilliance will live on in our hearts.
We will be holding a celebration of Ramona's life on Saturday, September 29th from 1pm-4pm at Club One (1 Ecclestone Dr., Bracebridge, ON), overlooking the falls where she liked to meditate.
If you would like to do something in memory of Ramona, please donate in her name to either Muskoka Animal Rescue, because of her great love of animals, or to Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services, because of all the support they have given her in the past year.
