On December 8th, 2024, at the age of 88, Roelf Simon Bakema passed peacefully at Amica Little Lake, in Barrie. Roelf was predeceased by his loving wife, Maria (Riet) Bakema.
He leaves behind three children, Betty (Brian), Renne (Irene) and Paul (Tracey), three Grandchildren, Michael (Marianne), Cheryl and Cody (Kimberley), and one Great Grandchild, Emma.
Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, Roelf immigrated to Canada at a young age. He became a pilot with the Dutch Airforce and trained at Base Borden and during that time, met his beautiful wife, Riet. Roelf devoted his time to raising his family and tending their family campground, which he called home for sixty-three years. Together, Roelf and Riet began their journey operating a business in the heart of Muskoka, a job that reflected his dedication and strong work ethic.
Roelf had a tremendous capacity for friendship and for maintaining these relationships over the years. His charm, wit, and good nature will never be forgotten. May his memory forever bring comfort and joy to those who knew him, and his legacy continue to inspire all who were blessed to share in his remarkable journey.
We would like to express our gratitude to his amazing care team, who provided him with exceptional care and always treated him with dignity, respect and love - Lisa and her team at Amica Little Lake.
Roelf's family would like to extend their thanks to friends and family near and far. As per Roelf's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sunnybrook Hospital, The Scott Mission or Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
