Verna Marie Vanclieaf (nee Norton) 89, of Baysville, passed away peacefully on August 14,
2019 at the Pines Long-Term Care Home in Bracebridge. Verna was born in Bracebridge to
James and Dorothy Norton on October 29, 1929 and had many fond memories of growing up
there with her older siblings, Fred, Elaine and Irene. As a young woman she worked in some of
the local businesses around town and knew much of their history. In later years, she enjoyed a
walk downtown and reminisced about the various changes to the stores that had occurred.
In 1952, Verna married Vernon Vanclieaf and moved to Baysville where she devoted her time
to making a loving home for their three boys, Dale, Jamie and Barry. Over the years, she was
an active member of many groups in Baysville including the Baysville Horticultural Society, St.
Ambrose Anglican Church, and Baysville Autumn Leaves Seniors Club. She taught clog
dancing and she loved a game of cards - especially with her grandchildren - and many a family
dinner ended with a game or two.
Verna was predeceased by her parents, siblings, her husband Vernon (2007) and very tragically,
by her son, Jamie in 1984. She is survived by her sons, Dale (Cathy) and Barry (Cathy) both of
Baysville. She was a loving Nana to Danielle Vanclieaf (Adam Saunders) of Bracebridge and
Jordan Vanclieaf (Holly) of Baysville and was a welcoming Step-Nana to Matthew Scriven of
Ottawa and David Scriven of Bracebridge. Danielle and Jordan have many happy stories
about their Nana to share with her great-grandchildren, Jackson and Cali. Verna is also
survived by her nephew and nieces, Wayne, Jude and Wendy, all of British Columbia.
Heartfelt thanks is extended to all of the wonderful nurses, caregivers, support staff and
volunteers at the Pines, who cared so tenderly for Verna over the past eight years, as well as to
Dr. Cross and the staff at Bracebridge Medical Arts Centre.
Verna will be buried in Baysville in a private, family service and there will be a Celebration of
Life Saturday August 24th at 2:00 p.m. at the Baysville Autumn Leaves Senior Centre. As an
expression of your sympathy, donations to the Pines in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated.
